CERTIFICATE TRAININGS

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)

Over the Reading Week, we held another Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) workshop! We are happy to announce that we have 19 new individuals that are trained in suicide intervention and who can help in building a suicide-safer community. Each semester, we are one step closer to our overall goal of a stronger UTSC community where everyone has the skills and knowledge to support peers living with mental illness. ASIST will be back again next school year, and we encourage you to join in next time!

Here is what some of our attendees had to say!

"ASIST was an informative yet fun experience for me! This program has equipped me with the necessary knowledge and skills to detect and help those who may be at risk of suicide. I believe that all students should partake in this two-day training program as suicide prevention is an essential skill and knowing how to intervene can potentially save a life."
- Shanthos T.

"I think my favourite part of the training was how inclusive and undiscriminating all the participants were about the topic of suicide and our group work dedicated towards practicing scenarios/situations. The trainers were very considerate and patient with everyone's questions and responses, and I overall really enjoyed the atmosphere."
- Suraiyaa K.

"I’d definitely recommend ASIST to my peers because this workshop gives you the skills necessary to help those at risk and even save a life. Suicide (intervention) isn’t usually a topic people discuss and often times people don’t think they can prevent it, but with ASIST everyone can take the chance to learn more about suicide and the steps we can take to prevent it."
- Arliz L.

Our group aims to provide learning opportunities for UTSC students to practice skills necessary for addressing mental health concerns. TMUG actively partners with external organizations to various kinds of workshops to UTSC.
